Agra Fort was constructed by the 3rd Mughal emperor, Akbar. It was the primary residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty until 1638, when the Mughal capital was shifted from Agra to the Red Fort in Delhi.
Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of the most important and robustly built strongholds of the Mughals, adorned with numerous richly decorated buildings that embody the imposing Mughal style of art and architecture.
Agra Fort was the site of a pivotal battle during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, marking the end of the British East India Company's rule in India and paving the way for a century of direct British rule in India.
The Agra Fort won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004.
